The start of the 2001 UK harness racing season has been severely disrupted by the Foot & Mouth Disease problem, with hard tracks delaying their openings & grass track racing virtually wiped out until the end of June. At the onset of the disease, the BHRC agreed with MAFF that until the crisis was over, all racing would take place under the conditions, restrictions & regulations drawn up by MAFF & the BHB for the thoroughbred racing industry. It is the duty of every race organiser (and indeed of everyone attending a harness race meeting) to take sensible precautions to ensure that the spread of the disease is kept to a minimum until such times as the restrictions are lifted & the danger removed.
