GLORY FOR GLYN AT GRAND FINALE The sun-burnished Leominster circuit attracted a huge crowd for the final local meeting under BHRC rules of 2002, and the 'feel-good factor' was much in evidence. Graham Hammonds' consistent mare, Ginger Spice (Andrew Rees) finally got her head in front when making all in the novice non-winners event, though both divisions of the maidens were won by 'raiders' -Blue Diamond (Hughie Burton) and Proud Alice (John Till). Steve Jones' Highbrooks Cobra was another who enjoyed a long-overdue success, blasting past the opposition in the Open Handicap Non-Winners event with Mark Pritchard. He had earlier qualified for The Roy Pugh Memorial Final by dead heating for third place with Gareth Price, and fantastically, dead-heated again for that position in the final. Owner Arnie Flower gained some consolation for his frustrating ankle injury when Peaks Pastime scored a stirring triumph by a short head with Sarah Mould, graduating to intermediate status. But the golden day undoubtedly belonged to the charismatic Glyn Slade-Jones and his father's sizzling Sourbrook Stanley. The six-year -old charged to the front and left the considerable opposition flat-footed to grab the glory in the top grade heat, notching his fifth success with such runaway tactics. Trailing ten yards in the Final, Glyn suspected that Stanley might not be able to blaze his usual trail, but with a spectacular burst of speed, he swept round the 'traffic' to seize an early advantage. Another course specialist, Thorneyside Scoot (Steve Lees) duelled with him up the home straight, but Stanley was not to be denied victory number six, prevailing by a neck and securing yet more silverware for the Lyonshall sideboard. Sprinting from his sulky seat, Glyn shrugged into his fancy dress outfit for the sponsored Fun Foot Race following the racing, and made it a hat trick with his 'partner' Pete Lloyd. Their convincing 'John Major and Edwina Currie' outfits took the top prize in a very competitive field of vampires, gorillas, pantomime horses et al. Following various presentations to unsung heroes, a cheque for £500 was handed over from the Castle Carvery (Rhayader) to the winner of the 'Ten To Follow' competition, Moss Pharmacy, Llandrindod Wells. A successful end to a busy and enjoyable season.
